Unless I mistake my guess, the website has been hacked (hopefully, they made backups).

Oh, for us non-New Yorkers, will there be a transcript and/or audio recording posted online afterwords?

Seeing as many of us can't drop everything and fly to New York (much less, you know, pay for it), it would be great if John would indeed post his speech. I just hope it's not an unintelliglble Korzybskian treatise, filled with terms like "counterbalanced semantic perception" and "sublimated tautology."

No, it was a very simple speech about how he came to write Null-A Continuum. You've probably heard most of it before. ;-) I'll ask him about it, though.

Trying to catch up on all these postings.

I found Null-A fascinating. On one hand, the saying "The Map is not the Territory" makes a great deal of sense (this one idea spawned or at least influence both NLP & CBT, the latter offering an intriguing counter-point to behaviorism). On the other, my Aristotelian thought process cannot wrap my mind around the idea of non-identity. How can you think of anything without first identifying what you are supposed to be thinking of? The best that I could come up with, is that it is a caution to be mindful of that process, in order to be sure that the identification is at least sufficient for the task at hand. At least that is how I read it anyways.

Yeah, I'm with you.

The other thing I notice, especially with NLP, is it all seems to be like prayer without God...as if there is this mechanism for how prayer works and they've cut off the top part that explains why it works and are working just from the appearances. I'm constantly reminded of religiou, but it's not. (Well, except for Scientology, which kind of is. Scientology is also based on General Semantics, apparently.)

As a humorous aside, when I saw the title for this journal entry, "Personal Appearance," I thought John would be treating us to some fashion tips.

FASHION TIPS:

In the world of high fashion glamor, the key to success is big hat

big hat02

It is important to have a big hat.

big hat04

I mean, really important to have a big hat.

big hat

I mean, if you are going to be fashionable, it is really important to have a big hat. It has to be a hat big enough that the word 'GNORMOUS' springs to mind, even if 'Gnormous' is not really a word.

big hat05

It has to be a hat gnormous enough to club a baby harp seal to deal if you nodded your head too quickly.

big hat06

For a lady of impeccable fashion sense, nothing says 'I am a Somebody and I have Vibrational Mind Control Powers' like a really big hat.

big hat07

If your big hat also stops Vibrational Mind Control Powers from your crippled half-brother, all the better!

Even evil cave-dwelling extraterrestrials sport fashionably oversized hats, so this comes across as sage advice indeed. If it's good enough for the inhabitants of Tschai, it's good enough for me!

Just don't wear these things indoors. Particularly movie theaters.
